“We truly enjoy our customers – I learned to speak English at the farmers’ markets,” says Monika Michel, an apple and pear vendor since 1999 along with daughter Jeannine Richter. Besides the farm work, their husbands, Helmut and Uwe, do all the repairs, building and maintenance on the 100-acre farm the family purchased in 1997 to emigrate from Germany. The two couples, who learned to care for the 50-acre orchard from the previous owner, now sell 100% farm-made gelato ice cream, apple cider and products from the beehive at their on-site store. To the delight of their customers and the local community, the Michels and Richters love the life they’ve built on the farm they call home.
