Food Safety at Ontario Farmers’ Markets
Food safety helps build trust between farmers, vendors, market organizers and the people who shop at farmers’ markets.
Everyone who prepares, transports, stores, displays or sells food has a role to play. Following safe food-handling practices helps protect customers, supports vendors and strengthens confidence in Ontario’s farmers’ market community.

Food Safety Is a Shared Responsibility
Food can pass through several stages before it reaches a customer. Safe practices are important during:
- Preparation and processing
- Packaging and labelling
- Transportation
- Storage and temperature control
- Display and sampling
- Customer service and sales
Farmers, vendors, employees, market managers and organizers should understand the requirements that apply to their products and activities. They should also follow any direction provided by their local public health unit or other appropriate authority.
Supporting Safe and Welcoming Markets
Farmers’ Markets Ontario® (FMO) does not inspect or regulate farmers’ markets. Our role is to support food safety awareness and education by sharing practical information with market managers, organizers, vendors and their teams.
FMO works with government, public health and sector partners to help the farmers’ market community better understand food safety responsibilities and good practices.
Requirements may vary depending on the food being sold, how it is prepared and the local public health unit. Market organizers and vendors should contact their local public health unit for guidance about permits, inspections, food handling and other requirements that may apply.
By working together and making food safety part of everyday market operations, we can help create positive and trusted experiences for everyone.
